The other day I was walking out of my store in the mall to go on a break. And as I walked through the doors, into the mall this man, straight across the mall from me made eye contact with me, not that unusual except for this man was in handcuffs and was being frisked by the Chandler Police! Awkward!
So there I was in one of those situations of not knowing what to say. Should I smile and say "Have a nice day"? Or maybe give him the ole head nod and a "so, what are you in for?" Or should I go the other way with "It sucks to be you!" I think I just gave him a half smile and kept on walking.
But, thinking about this, I'm reminded of one of my favorite movies from Childhood. Mary Poppins! She sings a song about the word your supposed to say when you don't know what to say: "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious, if you say it loud enough, you'll always sound precocious! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" (I remember Zach, when he was little, studied very hard to learn how to spell that word!) So, what do you say when you don't know what to say?
I have always loved the movie Mary Poppins. And on my 40th Birthday, my sister-in-law gave me the limited edition DVD, she was so excited to give me my gift, you see it was the 40th Anniversary Edition of Mary Poppins. She truly had found the perfect gift for me! One of my childhood favorites was turning 40 along with me!
I find myself quoting that movie quite often, and so do all my kids. We sang "A spoonful of Sugar helps the medicine go down" to my mom while she was in the hospital. And the other day we drove past a park where a father & son we're flying a kite and simultaneously, I, and all my kids started singing "Let's Go Fly A Kite" together. It was so funny!
And just last week I found myself in a conversation with a friend of my sons who's in college, and for reason's I can't remember now, we were talking about the bird lady from Mary Poppins, who sold bird seed to people to feed the birds outside of the bank. There are so many life lessons to be learned from Mary Poppins!
I think it might be time to, once again go jump into a chalk picture and take a ride on a carousel horse. Or dance on a rooftop with some chimney sweeps! See, now you want to go watch it again too, don't you?!

I believe in Mary Poppins, and our family tradition is to watch Mary Poppins on our dvd every New Year to meet the New Year! :)
What a great way to start off the New Year! Thanks for sharing your tradition with us.
Oh yes, Mary Poppins is great! There is much mischief under that proper demeanor.
I used to have laughing fits, (and sometimes still do) so "I Love to Laugh" is my song at times, but I love so many of the songs in the movie.
Wouldn't life be fun if we all just broke out into song and dance like in the musicals?!!!
Oh Nancy, I love the laughing scene too! Maybe you and I should have a tea party on the ceiling!
Yeah! It really is! :) It's my fav tradition! Staring off the New Year with MAGIC!!!!! :) :)
