March Sadness

This time of year, a lot of people are talking about March Madness & filling in their brackets, etc. and that can be a lot of fun. But, I have a little different perspective right now. As March came last year my kids had 3 living Grandparents, as March comes to an end this year they are down to only 1. My heart breaks for them. They have always been close to their Grandparents. I never really knew my Grandparents & have always been so thankful that my kids had theirs!

It's been such a hard year after loosing my Mom, and now My Father In Law of over 25 years, Bob Forbis, has joined both my Parents in Heaven. I'm so glad he is no longer in pain. He had been for much too long. And he is up out of that wheel chair, that had been a part of him for probably as long as my kids can remember. (They did love to play in it though when they were little.) :) He was always a lot of fun & always good for a laugh. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Then & Now:
A Boy & his Dad!

Us!

Kyle!

Zach!

Erica & Lexi!

Thanks for so many great memories filled with Laughter. You will be missed. We Love you.

Arizona Aloha Festival 2013

One of my absolute Favorite things about Spring is the Arizona Aloha Festival! It is the Largest Hula Festival outside of Hawaii, and it's right here in the middle of the Arizona desert!

My girls & I used to Dance Hula & we have actually danced in the Aloha Festival! (Great Memories!) And we have gone every year since then to see our friends & Hula Sista's dance.

And every year we always say how much we miss Hula! It is so Beautiful! And it is on my Bucket List to someday get to actually Hula in Hawaii! :) (The above picture is of two of my favorite Hula dancers; Denese & Debbie!)

The Festival is always a Saturday & Sunday in March, at Tempe Beach Park & this year it was cold & storming on Saturday, so no one hardly came out, but on Sunday it was warm & sunny and more crowded than I have ever seen it!

Erica, Lexi & Kyle Hanging Loose in front of a canoe! There are Hawaiian food booths & of course Hawaiian Shaved Ice, (which we have to have EVERY year!) There is all kinds of Vendors & Activities. You can take a Ukulele lesson, (someday I will buy my Husband a Ukulele!) make a lei, hear stories of the Hawaiian culture, & much more.

The girls & I tried our hand at something called Hot Hula Fitness! It was fun! And Erica was directly in eye shot of the instructor & she kept saying "Good Job, girl in the white shirt, you got it!" (which of course embarrassed Erica & made us laugh!) :)

And there is a lot of shopping! Over the years we've bought everything from T-shirts to luggage, from accessories like shark teeth necklaces & flowers for our hair, to pareo's (which is a Hawaiian sarong to use as swimsuit cover-ups!) This year the girls wanted rings. Lexi chose Dolphins & Erica a Treble Clef! Sterling Silver.

And I bought Steering Wheel Covers, Grey for John's car, Green for Kyles & Pink for my car for $5.00 a piece! Score! You can spend a LOT, or a little. But there is always a lot to see!

Smile! Instead of fighting the traffic we like to ride the Light Rail! It's convenient & you meet all kinds of interesting people! And you can usually tell by the way people are dressed who's going to the Aloha Festival! :)

The Festival is always a highlight of our year. Next year will be the 20th Anniversary of the Arizona Aloha Festival! And of course we will be there! Hope you will be too! Until then we will continue to Live Aloha!

My First Time Guest Blogging!

A good Friend of mine, Chet DeRouen asked me to
Guest Blog on his site, Why Am I Gay?
He has been very Brave & Courageous, yet Vulnerable,
as he Honestly shares his life & struggles.

He asked me, as a Mom, as a Christian, as a Pastor's Wife,
to share how I raise my Children to be Loving &
Accepting of others who are different than they are.
Weather that be being Gay, or of other races, Handicapped, etc.

I was very Honored that first of all that he thought
I had raised my kids this way! :)
And secondly that He would Trust me enough to give me Voice on his site.
Again, let me say how Brave he is! :)

I've been overwhelmed by the response I've gotten on Facebook.
To be honest with you I was prepared for all the Haters
to sink their teeth into me,
but thankfully that didn't happen! (not yet anyway!) :)

So read it if you dare!

One Year Without A Mom

One year ago my Mother went away.

My world is not the same without her in it.

I miss her every day.

I want to talk and I want her to hear.

I want my kids to have her in their lives.

Their future spouses and kids will never know her.

How can that be?

It's just not right.

One year.

Is a year too long.

One year without a Mom.

Give Me Five: Favorite Romantic Movies!

You know me, I love my Chick Lit. But I also really love Chick Flicks! One of my Favorite Movie Genres is Romantic Comedies. I can't get enough of them. So I thought since this is Valentines Day Weekend, you might be looking for a Romantic Movie to watch with your Valentine. So I thought I'd share my top 5 favorites . . . . .

My Top 5 Romantic Movies Of All Time:

The Notebook
You can't go wrong with this one.
A moving story for couples of any age.
(And the best part: the lead character, Ally's shoes!
trust me, notice them)

Dirty Dancing
 I Love Dance Movies too
& this qualifies as both!
(And has one of my favorite actors, Patric Swayze)

Return To Me
If you have never seen this one, you Must.
It will make you Cry & Laugh!
(And has one of the best Movie Soundtracks ever!
We listen to it all the time!)
Keeping The Faith
 Friendship -vs- Love!
Can you have both?
(And maybe it's because I'm married to a Pastor,
but this movie always does it for me!) :)

Now for my last pick I have to go Old School! I Love the 80's! And that's when this Movie came out! It was my Favorite movie back in the day! Don't Judge Me!

Valley Girl
 Like Totally!
We really knew how to Talk & how to Dress back then! :)
Though the rating system was different back then, so proceed with caution.
(And Bonus, it stars Nicholas Cage,
before we even knew who he was!)

So, there you have it. Five of my Favorite Romantic Comedies! I'm planning on seeing Safe Haven in the Theater when we do our Valentine Date, and I have the Book waiting to be read after seeing the Movie! (You know how I roll!) :) Nicholas Sparks Books & Movies are usually really good. Besides The Notebook, Message In A Bottle is also a great one! And we've already watched Valentines Day, leading up to this weekend. So if you find your self at home wanting to watch a "Romantic" film, try out some of my suggestions & let me know what you think. I'm sure I'll be re-watching some of them myself! So here's to Romance & spending time with those you Love!

Happy Valentines Day!

The Art Of Asking

I am a naturally curious person, so asking questions tends to come easy for me. There isn't much I wont ask somebody. Inquiring minds want to know! :) But even the best can get stuck in the rut of "fine" answers. If you are a parent you've been responded to way too many times with "fine", "good" answers to your questions. How many times have you asked your kids or your husband how their day was, only to hear "fine." End of story. (or end of answer, in this case!) So over the years I've learned to hone my question asking.

I've always been an advocate for Families eating dinner together. No matter how busy our lives get, we need to be intentional about spending time together as a Family, and what better time than when having dinner. It's also the best time to talk. You have a Captive Audience sitting around the Dinner table. Weather that table is at home or in a Restaurant. So use that time to talk. And you can start with knowing how to ask questions. . .

I was reminded of what I'm calling The Art of Asking Questions in a Women's Bible Study I've been in called, Becoming A Woman Of Influence By: Carol Kent. This is good for us no matter what our walk of life happens to be. A Wife, a Mother, a Friend, a Sister, a Daughter, a Co-worker, or meeting someone for the very first time. Relationships can start & become strengthened simply by knowing how to ask the right Questions.

For a man who had all the answers, Jesus sure asked a lot of questions! He was Wise, not Condescending. He used questions. And we can too. When we ask the right questions, it causes people to reflect & examine. It Encourages higher level thinking skills. To uncover the real story, you have to ask the right questions.

Over the years, with my kids especially, but also with others, whether it's a conversation with a friend or family member, or even a Job Interview, I've learned to stop asking questions that can be answered with one word responses, such as "fine", "good", "yes", "no", "nothing". Such as the aforementioned "How was your day?" :) I got more specific in my questions. For example, instead of asking "How was school today?" (fine, good, etc) I got more creative in my question asking, to find out more information about my kids & their day! I started asking questions like "What was your Favorite Class Today?" or "Who'd you sit by at Lunch today?" "What did you guys talk about?" "How did that make you feel?" Questions that have to be answered with more than one word. Answers that would reveal something! That's what I call The Art Of Asking Questions! And anyone can do it! Think about some of the Best Questions you've ever heard asked. For me that would include: Dr. Phil's "How's that working out for you?" :) or Oprah's "What do you KNOW that's For Sure?"

There's a story in the Bible (found in Matthew chapter 14) where the Disciples were in a boat & Jesus came walking on the water out to meet them. They were terrified at first, thinking they were seeing a ghost. Peter (one of the Disciples) told Jesus, if it's really You, tell me to come out on the water to You, which Jesus did. Walking on the water, Peter looked at the waves around him & started to sink. Jesus used a question to get Peter to think. He said "you of little Faith, Why did you Doubt?" It makes me think of when my oldest son was little, he loved the water, even before he could swim. He was Fearless in Floaties! :) Even jumping off diving boards! I remember one time he jumped in with an inflatable ring around his middle & slid right through! We were there on the side of the pool watching it unfold. He doggy paddled to the edge & pulled himself up. Crying & gasping for air, he asked the only question on his mind: "Dad, Why didn't you save me?" to which his dad answered, "Because you were Swimming! I was right here, you were doing it! You swam Buddy! I didn't need to save you!" I watched my sons little face go from sheer terror, to being hurt & upset his Dad hadn't jumped in, to amazement in the realization he'd just swam! Which brings me to me next point, what you find out from asking questions & what they reveal with their answers, may be very different from what you were expecting. So be prepared for that possibility.

Another thing to remember when learning The Art Of Asking Questions is that if you, like me, are a Talker, it's also an art form to learn to wait & let them answer! Good questions help us & them to slow down so we don't speak too quickly. If someone is asking for advice, when your tempted to jump in with how to resolve their problem, learn how to pause & ask questions. The more you learn about the real issue, the better prepared you'll be to give an answer yourself. Questions get through better than any lecture will. Trust me, it will benefit you greatly in every Relationship you have to learn The Art Of Asking!

 Good Questions -vs- Great Questions
"Good questions create interest; great ones inspire a response.
Good questions open conversations; great ones open souls.
Good questions raise issues; great ones evoke dreams and visions.
Good questions elicit ideas; great questions uncover needs."

I've Never Been So Thankful To Have The Flu!

I know that may sound strange to say I was actually Thankful & even Grateful to have the Flu this week, but let me explain, by starting at the beginning; back in July I started breaking out in Hives. I kept thinking they would go away & they kept not going away. I would wake up every morning covered in Hives. Large red welts, that would hurt & itch. When even my face started swelling & it got difficult to breath I decided to go to the Doctor. (Also my health Insurance from my new job kicked in!) He put me on high doses of Steroids to knock out the hives & sent me to an Allergist.

I underwent two rounds of skin tests for allergies & thankfully I'm not allergic to any foods! I can keep eating whatever I want to! Yay me! :) Actually the only thing the skin tests did show was a mild to moderate reaction to some molds. At this point the Dr. thought it could be Auto Immune. One of my biggest fears in life was about to come to the forefront. He asked me if there was any Lupus in my family. And yes, my Sister had Lupus. She passed away, from Cancer, not from Lupus, but I watched her struggle with it my whole life. Back when I was pregnant with my Twin Daughters (who are now 15) I had a Blood test called an A.N.A. which was positive. I was told then, that it didn't necessarily mean that I had Lupus, but everyone who does have Lupus is positive, And that it should be something I should keep an eye on throughout my life.

Now I have always loved my Sister Dearly! And there are many ways I have wanted to be like her, but this was not one of them. And like I said it's been one of my biggest fears in my life, that I would have Lupus. It had been there in the back of my mind & when I started having Hives I googled everything from bed bugs to shingles, to allergic reactions, to try to figure out what it could be. The one thing I knew I was avoiding looking up, was Lupus. Finally I gave in & looked it up & it talked about rash & hives. I began to worry. Then when my Dr. wanted to test me for it, I knew this was it. My fears were coming true. I got the Blood test & waited & worried. I told only my family that I was being tested. And I know they prayed. I was trying to come to terms what my life would be like from this point on.

Two days before my appointment to find out my test results, I woke up really dizzy & nauseous & for the first time in my last 4 jobs, except for family emergencies, I called in sick. It was not pretty. For two days, I couldn't lift my head off the pillow without nearly falling over. I could remember my sister dealing with dizziness & nausea. I remember John coming into the room to check on me & found me crying. When he asked me why, I said, "What if this is the rest of my life? Me, too sick to work, or be involved in the kids' lives?" He kind of laughed, & said, "You're not going to be sick for the rest of your life, you just have the Flu!" I said "The Flu is throwing up, not being dizzy!" He said "It's been all over the news, this year it's been effecting people with dizziness really bad!" I tell you, I've never been so happy to have the flu! Thank you God!

Then on the 3rd day, I was still tired & weak, but I could at least get up. John went with me to my Dr.'s appointment. And my test for Lupus is NEGATIVE! I am so relieved! Again, Thank You God! The Dr. still doesn't know just what's causing my hives, the Blood test for allergies were all negative. He's upping my Antihistamines to try & knock it out, and wants me to try to go all fragrance free! Me, who worked at Bath & Body Works, & uses all it's fragranced soaps, body washes, lotions, creams, hand sanitizers, candles, room fresheners, car fresheners, well you get the picture! My husband actually LOL'd when the Dr. asked if I used fragranced body care! Ouch! But, I'll try anything at this point. So we bought fragrance free laundry detergent, & shower gel. Hope I survive this! :) On the way home I texted all my brothers, sister in laws & my kids to let them know I didn't have Lupus, & my Hubby said "Tell, them, now they really have to start praying, since you can't use your Bath & Body Works!" :)
